Weakness is often misconstrued as exclusively a state of physical or mental deficiency. But if we were to look deeper, we would find that weakness is not a lack of capability but it is fundamentally about a lack of control. Those who lack the discipline to deny easy dopamine hits of instant gratification will never achieve their full potential. Weakness is not just about physical or mental frailty, but an existential condition - a lack of control over one's impulses and destiny.
The weak are slaves to their immediate desires, unable to pursue long-term goals or break destructive patterns. Weakness is a self-reinforcing cycle where a lack of discipline in one area bleeds into all others. As I said, this is not necessarily tied to the current physical or mental state. Instead, it is a manifestation of what can be termed 'existential weakness'. Physical, emotional, mental, and psychological weaknesses are mere expressions of this underlying existential frailty.
Existential weakness stems from the absence of discipline to grow in various dimensions of life. Those who neglect intellectual and athletic development often find themselves trailing in mental, emotional, and psychological spheres. This weakness is rooted in a fundamental lack of purpose and a deficiency of willpower.
The inability to resist the easy pleasures of immediate gratification and dopamine rushes prevents individuals from realizing their full potential in any life domain. This creates a self-perpetuating cycle, trapping a person in a state of existential weakness that becomes self-reinforcing.
Consider someone who can't resist the allure of binge-watching TV shows or consuming junk food. This lack of control results in physical weakness. Similarly, the inability to stop "doom scrolling" or indulging in Reality Shows like Splitsvilla and Roadies leads to wasting productive time, resulting in intellectual weakness. This, in turn, culminates in a purposeless life, triggering emotional, psychological, and mental distress. Everything is interconnected, but it all begins with control, or the lack thereof.
Formally speaking, weakness is the state of being in which a person's actions are primarily driven by impulses and desires, rather than by a conscious intention to pursue a particular goal or outcome. Weakness is when a person is not the author of their own life, but rather a passive actor buffeted about by random desires and stimuli. They are not in control of their own actions or their own destiny. They're reactive rather than proactive.
In the next post, I'll share what to do about it. Till then, have a good one!
